Chicago is ranked high on the food scene thanks to deep dish pizza, Italian beef sandwiches, and hot dogs.

But there are also options for those who don’t chow down on meat. Chicago’s vegan food scene is rapidly growing, and includes a group of talented chefs on a mission to create more food options on the city’s South Side.

From vegan shrimp boat to The Big Mik, Chicago’s chefs are cooking up a menu of plant-based pleasures that will satisfy your taste buds. Here are a few restaurants you should add to your list if you haven’t tried them yet.

Soul Veg City

Monday-Friday -11am – 6pm

Saturday-Sunday – 10am – 12pm (breakfast only)12-6pm

Soul Veg City has been supplying the community with plant-based bites for over 40 years. Located in Chicago’s Chatham neighborhood, Soul Veg City introduced the idea of an alternative American cuisine through appetizing plant-based foods, making it a popular local hangout spot for those seeking a transformative food experience.

If you go into the restaurant, you’ll note a powerful mission pasted on the wall: “Be the premier vegan restaurant that serves as your one-stop shop for veganism through effectively educating communities and beyond.”

Soul Veg City offers Zesty Cauliflower Wingz, Jerk Nachos, Black-Eyed Pea Burger, summertime smoothies, and so many more creative plant-based food options. I ordered the Vegan Shrimp Boat a few times, and have never been disappointed. This crispy golden shrimp sandwich on a hoagie roll is soy-free and finger-licking good. They’ve been cooking up delicious options since 1981, and we can’t wait to see what’s next as the restaurant celebrates its 1-year return.

Tuesday-Saturday -11am – 8pm

Located on the corner of Chicago’s South Shore community is a soulful vegan restaurant waiting to serve you plant-based cuisine. Majani Soulful Vegan Cuisine sits in a cozy setting with exquisite lights, making it perfect for a comfortable family experience.

This vegan-focused gem was the dream of chefs Nasya and Tsadakeeyah Emmanuel. The married couple opened the restaurant in May 2017, and have served as a positive light in a community often plagued by gun violence.

Not vegan? No problem. Majani’s offers flavorful foods that cater to a variety of taste buds. The menu includes BBQ Cauliflower, Soul Tacos, Black Eye Pea Burger, Vegetable Gumbo & Yellow Rice. If you’re looking for soy free options, you can grab the Falafel Burger, Ginger Lemonade, Beans & Rice Soul Bowl. Check the menu for a list of options.

Bronzeville’s Bike Box, also known as Boxville, is home to many local restaurants, including Conscious Plates. This alkaline vegan restaurant is “creating sovereign communities that empowers people to have access to healthy alkaline food, holistic healing services, fulfilling work opportunities, and land and business ownership opportunities, all within one ecosystem,” according to the company’s website.

It all started as a pop-up restaurant in 2018, and then Conscious Plates joined the Boxville community in 2019. Millennial founder Latrell Garnett wanted to give Chicago’s South Side a type of vegan menu that appealed to conscious eaters. That led Garnett to develop a 100% Dr. Sebi-inspired alkaline menu. His creations are vegan, soy-free, wheat-free, and starch-free.

Check out the menu, and you’ll find popular items like Fajita Fries, Shroom Tacos, Waffle Supreme, and Chickpea Egg Sandwich.

If you’re a meat eater, you’ll be surprised when you take a bite of Can’t Believe It’s Not Meat. It’s not what comes to mind when you think of vegan food, but the mouth-watering options will have you going back for more.

Chef Laricia Chanlder Baker, better known as Chef Fab, hooks you up with the ultimate flexitarian dishes. She opened Can’t Believe It’s Not Meat in 2019, and has fed guests with flavorful food options since that moment. She’s even opened up multiple locations in Illinois. Both vegans and meat eaters like to patronize this resturant.

At Can’t Believe It’s Not Meat, you’ll find popular fast food options customized to fit the plant-based eater. Take The Big Mik for example. Get your vegan patties, special sauce, sesame seed bun, and all the extras you would get with a McDonald’s Big Mac. My favorite menu items include the Vegan Patty Melt, Philly Cheese Steak Egg Rolls, and The Big Mik.
