On November 17, 2022, Mayor Lightfoot announced that private buyers can purchase and redevelop 2,000 vacant Chicago lots. These lots are part of a larger pool of approximately 10,000 city-owned lots acquired through demolition liens and foreclosures over the last 70 years.

In the past, the city has launched several programs to sell empty land. These programs include Large Lots, Adjacent Neighbors Land Acquisition Program (ANLAP), Sealed Bid, and Negotiated Sale.

This year, the city launched a new comprehensive portal called ChiBlockBuilder, which consolidates Chicago’s land sale programs. ChiBlockBuilder will help buyers find available properties, identify prices, and complete the application process.

“Our goal with ChiBlockBuilder is simple: to put vacant land to productive use in a community-driven way,” said Mayor Lightfoot in a statement. “Vacant land presents an opportunity for our residents and businesses to create the change they want to see in their communities.”

Most of the lots available for purchase are located in economically distressed communities that have experienced decades of underinvestment. They are part of the Mayor’s 10 communities in the INVEST South/West revitalization strategy, which includes South Side neighborhoods like Auburn Gresham, Greater Englewood, Greater Roseland, New City, South Chicago, and South Shore.

All interested parties can submit applications by February 3, 2023 to gain access to the first round of 2,000 lots. You can review the application checklist to learn more about the process.

If you live next to a vacant lot, you can apply to purchase it at 10% of its market value. The vacant lots can be used for community gardens, parks, affordable or market-rate housing, fenced yards, stores, and restaurants.

The city will make more vacant lots available for sale throughout 2023. You can keep track of the properties and application deadlines by visiting Chicago.gov/BlockBuilder.
