Scholarships are a great way for students to fund their college application. The best part is that you don’t have to be the smartest person in your class or a top athlete to secure a scholarship. There are hundreds of scholarships out there for people who check the box on different criteria.

I know scholarships can be a game changer, because they helped me achieve my academic and professional goals. I didn’t start college with a ton of scholarships. In fact, I started with a pocket full of pennies and a head full of dreams. But my desire to graduate college was so strong that I was willing to apply for hundreds of scholarships to graduate college debt-free.

And it worked. In June 2009, I crossed the stage at my college graduation without any student loan debt. I wrote about my journey in Debt-Free Before Graduation: A First Generation College Student’s Guide to Go From $0 to Over $100K in Less Than Four Years, so that other students can have the blueprint for scholarship success.

After you review the book, you’ll be ready to apply for scholarships. You’ll also increase your chances of racking up thousands of dollars from people who believe in your dreams just as much as you do.

If you’re wondering where to start, don’t worry. Chicago Southsider has done all the heavy lifting for you. We’ve compiled a list of scholarships that you can apply for right now. All you have to do is share your story with scholarship providers.

If you have questions during the process or want to learn more about financial aid, Scholarship Momma is a great resource. This is a Black-owned business founded by a Chicago Southsider.
