Chicago-area homeowners can now apply for property tax exemptions for the 2025 tax year, which could help lower their annual property tax bills.
Property tax exemptions reduce the taxable value of a home, allowing eligible homeowners to pay less in property taxes. One of the most common is the Homeowner Exemption. This exemption saves homeowners an average of about $950 per year, according to Cook County.
Several other exemptions may also be available depending on a homeowner’s age, disability status, or military service. These include:
- Senior Exemption
- Senior Freeze
- Veteran with Disabilities
- World War II Veterans
- Person with Disabilities
Many homeowners qualify for more than one exemption, but they must apply to receive the savings.
Applying online is typically the easiest option, and some exemptions may automatically renew in future years once approved.
Homeowners can also review exemptions they received in previous years by checking their property details online and looking under the “Exemption History & Status” section.
