Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday falls on January 15, but the national holiday will be observed on Monday, January 20. This year marks what would have been the 96th birthday of the iconic civil rights leader, who was tragically assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee, on April 4, 1968. MLK Day serves as a time to honor and reflect on the enduring legacy of one of America’s most influential civil rights activists.
More than five decades have passed since Dr. King delivered his speech at Soldier Field in Chicago. That day, known as Freedom Sunday, represented a bold move in our country’s history. During Dr. King’s speech on July 10, 1966, he declared, “This day we must declare our own Emancipation Proclamation. This day we must commit ourselves to make any sacrifice necessary to change Chicago,” the Chicago Tribune reported.
Dr. King’s goal was to end discrimination in housing throughout Chicago. President Lyndon Johnson signed the Fair Housing Act into law on April 11, 1968, a week after Dr. King’s death. Known as Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, this law prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, and national origin in housing transactions.
Across Chicago’s South Side, individuals and community organizations are coming together to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. At Chicago Southsider, we’re dedicated to preserving Dr. King’s vision by sharing valuable resources and information to uplift our community.
