Bronzeville’s latest Black woman-owned coffee kiosk has made it to Boxville. Southside Grinds Coffee Co. celebrated its grand opening on Saturday, September 18, 2021 with live music, free samples, and coffee enthusiasts.

“We are a coffee company that was founded out of a desire to spread love and caffeination across Chicago’s South Side,” Ebony, Founder of Southside Grinds Coffee Co., shared during an exclusive with Chicago Southsider. “The community is underserved, undercommerced, and underbeveraged. It’s been an amazing opportunity to bring caffeination to 51st street.”

According to Southside Grinds’ website, Ebony was “brewed in Brooklyn and seasoned in Woodlawn.” After graduating from college, she had an idea to blend her coffee passion with her community development desires. This was the beginning of a socially conscious coffee brand.

“There’s nothing like a place that’s rich in culture but poor in commerce,” says Ebony. “I’m a Southsider so I want to have commerce where I live. Nothing brings a community together and creates a vibe like a coffee shop.”

Carter from Minor Figures Oat Milk, a nondairy milk producer for coffee, was a sponsor for Southside Grinds’ grand opening event. He’s been in the coffee business for seven years and serves as the Midwest Regional Sales Manager at Minor Figures.

“My goal is to build culture and identity for Minor Figures in Chicago,” says Carter. “It’s something that I’m passionate about. The proximity of Boxville is perfect for coffee”.

Boxville is Chicago’s first mobile marketplace that caters to residents and visitors on the South Side of the city. It’s located next to the 51st Street Green Line stop. The space provides local entrepreneurs a chance to provide a much-needed service to the community at economical prices.

Southside Grinds Coffee Co. provides roasted coffee beans and freshly brewed coffee in their coffee kiosk. Check out the signature selections here. The coffee shop is open Monday – Saturday from 8am – 3pm.
