A new Chicago story is taking center stage.
Steppenwolf is continuing its 50th Anniversary Season with Windfall, a new play written by Academy Award-winning playwright Tarell Alvin McCraney.
Now playing through May 31, 2026, the production brings together members of Steppenwolf’s renowned ensemble for a story that feels both timely and deeply connected to the city.
Set in Chicago — a city that has experienced ongoing conversations around policing, accountability, and justice — Windfall follows a father navigating life after the loss of his child in an encounter with police.
After the tragedy, he is approached with a financial settlement from the city. What follows is a deeply personal and difficult decision: accept the money and attempt to move forward, or reject it and continue seeking justice.
The story reflects questions many Chicagoans are familiar with, especially in communities where conversations about justice and systemic accountability are not abstract, but lived experiences.
Windfall is now playing at Steppenwolf Theatre, located at 1646 N. Halsted St., with performances running through May 31, 2026. You can purchase tickets here.
