The smell of barbecue, jerk chicken, and sweet treats will once again fill the streets of Bronzeville as one of the South Side’s newest summer traditions returns this month.
Founded by local cousins Diara and Robin Bradley, affectionately known as “The Bradleys,” Taste of Bronzeville was created to do more than satisfy appetites. It was designed to shine a spotlight on South Side restaurants, introduce residents to local entrepreneurs, and remind Chicago that some of the city’s best dining experiences can be found right here in Bronzeville and surrounding neighborhoods.
For the Bradleys, the festival is about investing in the community one meal, one business, and one connection at a time.
The inspiration for Taste of Bronzeville came after the cousins attended another Chicago food festival several years ago.
As they enjoyed the event, they found themselves asking a simple question:
“Why doesn’t this happen in our neighborhood?”
“We thought to ourselves, why doesn’t this happen in our neighborhood?” Diara Bradley told Chicago Southsider. “Why do people think they have to go up north or downtown or all these other places to get good food when there are so many great restaurants in our area?”
That conversation eventually became a mission.
Rather than watching people leave the South Side in search of great food, the Bradleys wanted to create an experience that encouraged residents to discover the incredible restaurants already serving Bronzeville and neighboring communities.
While Taste of Bronzeville celebrates food, its purpose reaches much deeper.
The festival was created to increase visibility for neighborhood restaurants and help small businesses attract new customers.
“I think a lot of these restaurants end up closing down just because people don’t know about them,” Bradley said. “People don’t have to go to all these other areas just to find good food. We’re really bringing attention to these businesses so they can stay open.”
Today, the festival features restaurants from Bronzeville, other South Side neighborhoods, and even nearby suburbs, giving businesses an opportunity to community members and visitors while celebrating the area’s rich culinary diversity.
According to the festival’s organizers, the event has continued to grow each year while helping participating restaurants and vendors gain exposure to new customers.
But organizing a festival of this size is no small task.
Bradley describes the operation as a “mighty team of two,” with both cousins balancing full-time careers while planning Taste of Bronzeville throughout the year. From recruiting restaurants and vendors to securing sponsors and coordinating logistics, every detail is handled with a shared commitment to creating an event the community can enjoy.
The festival’s first year exceeded their expectations, thanks to strong community support and enthusiastic participation from local businesses. While the event experimented with a different venue during its second year, the founders listened to community feedback and returned the celebration to a neighborhood-focused setting with a renewed commitment to keeping admission free whenever possible.
That commitment remains central to the festival’s mission today.
The Bradleys continue to seek sponsorships that allow them to keep admission free while reducing costs for participating restaurants and vendors, ensuring small businesses have the opportunity to profit from the event.
As Taste of Bronzeville continues to evolve, Bradley often reflects on another iconic South Side event.
She recalled speaking with one of the founders of the Chosen Few Picnic & Festival and learning how it began with just a handful of attendees before becoming one of Chicago’s most celebrated summer traditions.
That conversation reminded her that every great community tradition starts somewhere.
For the Bradleys, the goal has never been simply to host a successful food festival. Their vision is to build an event that residents look forward to every summer while creating lasting opportunities for South Side businesses and entrepreneurs.
